The cross country course at WakeMed Soccer Park (formerly SAS Soccer Park) is widely recognized as one of the premier venues of its kind in the United States. The course opened in the fall of 2003 and has already hosted a series of major, national running events. The Great American Cross Country Festival was held here in 2003, 2004, and 2005, and nearly 5,000 of the nation's best high school and collegiate runners competed each year. The NCAA Division II National Championships were contested at WakeMed Soccer Park in November 2003. WakeMed Soccer Park has also been the site of numerous high school and collegiate events. The Town of Cary operates and manages the facility.
